Your conversations: find, sort and delete them
Where your conversations are kept, how to start a new one, search them, mark favourites, archive or file them in folders, and delete one.
On this page
Every question you ask belongs to a conversation, and your conversations are listed so you can pick one up again, search them, sort them into folders or delete the ones you no longer need. Signed in, they are kept with your account and follow you from one device to the next.
Find your conversations
Where the list is
Web
- On a wide window, the list of your conversations stands on the left of the conversation. Hide the list folds it away.
- On a wide window, drag the right edge of the list to make it wider or narrower, and double-click it to bring back the usual width. The width is kept on that device.
- Folded, three buttons stay down the left edge: Show the list, New conversation and Search your conversations. On a medium-sized window these three are always there, and Show the list opens the list over the page.
- On a phone, the list slides in from the button at the top left of the conversation.
App
- On an iPhone, the Ask tab is the list. Tap a conversation to open it, and the arrow at the top left to come back to the list.
- On an iPad or a Mac, the list stands on the left of the conversation. Hide the list folds it away.
- On an iPad or a Mac with room to spare, drag the right edge of the list to make it wider or narrower, and double-tap it to bring back the usual width. The width is kept on that device.
- Folded, three buttons stay down the left edge: Show the list, New conversation and Search your conversations.
Start a new one
Tap New conversation, the round button at the top of the list, or the button at the top right of an open conversation on a phone. Your first question names the conversation, and soon after a short title of a few words, in the language of your question, takes its place: "The boy in Finland raised back to life", for example.
To give a conversation a name of your own, tap its title at the top of the conversation, type the new one and press Enter. A title too long for the bar scrolls sideways.
If you leave a conversation for half an hour or more and come back, a new conversation is waiting. The earlier one stays in the list.
Search and pick up again
- Type in Search your conversations. It looks in the titles, your questions and the answers. Every word you type must appear somewhere in the conversation, in any order, and accents do not matter.
- Under the search, the filters All, Favorites and one for each of your folders narrow the list. A search also looks in the archive.
- Each row gives the title, when the conversation was last used, its last line and how many questions it holds. A small dot before the title means an answer arrived while you were looking at something else. Opening the conversation clears it.
- On Home, Pick up again shows your latest conversations, and See all opens the whole list.
Sort them
Each conversation has a small menu for filing it: Add to favorites, Archive and Move to a folder.
Web
- Tap the ⋯ button on the conversation in the list.
- Choose Add to favorites, Archive or Move to a folder.
- For a folder, pick one, choose No folder to take the conversation out, or New folder to name a new one.
App
- Press and hold the conversation in the list. In an open conversation, tap the menu button at the top right instead.
- Choose Add to favorites, Archive or Move to a folder.
- For a folder, pick one, choose No folder to take the conversation out, or New folder to name a new one.
Archived conversations leave the list but are kept: Archived, under the search, shows them, and Unarchive brings one back. A folder appears as a filter beside All and Favorites, and the + at the end of the filters makes a new one.
Once you have a folder, a ⋯ at the end of the filters opens Manage folders: every folder with the number of conversations in it, a Rename and a Delete folder button beside each, and New folder at the foot. Deleting a folder does not delete its conversations: you find them under All. Folders come with an account; signed out, making one tells you to sign in.
Delete one
Web
- Tap the ⋯ button on the conversation in the list.
- Choose Delete this conversation.
- Tap Delete when asked Delete this conversation?
App
- Swipe the conversation to the left, or press and hold it and choose Delete this conversation.
- Check the title in the question that opens: Delete this conversation?
- Tap Delete.
Signed out and signed in
| Your conversations | Signed out | Signed in |
|---|---|---|
| Where they are kept | On this browser or device only | With your account, on every device you sign in on |
| How many | A handful; then you are asked to create an account to keep asking | A large number; if the list ever fills, delete some you no longer need |
| Folders | Not available | Available |
| When you sign out | Nothing changes | They leave this device and come back when you sign in again |
An account whose email address is not confirmed yet keeps only a handful, as if you were signed out. See Confirm your email address and Every device.
Where are my conversations?
Signed in, they are in the list on the Ask page, on every device. Signed out, they are only on the browser or device you asked on. If some seem to be missing, see Something is missing from my library.
Can I rename a conversation?
No. A conversation is named from your first question, then given a short title. To find it again, search for a word from it.
Can I delete all my conversations at once?
No. Conversations are deleted one at a time, so that none goes by accident.
Why did a new conversation open when I came back?
After half an hour or more away, a new conversation is waiting. The one you left is still in the list.
