Download the sermons and read without a connection
Download whole languages in the app’s Settings, or your main language on the website, to read without internet, and see what still needs a connection.
On this page
Sermons open online, and the device keeps a copy of those you read for a while. To read anywhere without internet, download a language: in the app, any of them, every version of every sermon in it; on the website, your main language.
What is downloaded stays on that device only. In the app, a plan you follow keeps its own texts by itself, whatever language it is in; on the website, the texts of your plans are kept once you keep the sermons.
Download a language
Web
- Click Settings in the panel on the right, just above your photo. On a narrow screen, open the menu first.
- Choose Sermons on this device. Its line says how much room the sermons take: about 108 MB for English.
- Click Download. You can keep using the site while it runs.
- When it says all the texts in your language are on this device, you are ready.
Nothing is downloaded until you ask for it here. Without it, the sermons and pages you have already opened on that device still open without a connection.
App
In the app, Sermons on this device in Settings lists every language with its size. Download as many as you like; nothing is downloaded until you ask.
- Open Settings and choose Sermons on this device.
- Tap Download beside a language. A bar shows how far it has got, and you can keep using the app.
- If you close the app, the download carries on where it stopped when you open it again.
In the app, keep as many languages as you like: each one shows its size before you download it. On the website the library holds one language, and the others are read online.
Manage it in Settings
Web
- Open Settings and choose Sermons on this device.
- Read its line: it says whether the sermons are not downloaded, downloading, paused or all on this device, with their size.
- Click the button it offers: Download, Continue now or Remove from this device.
App
- Open Settings: on iPhone, the gear on the You tab; on iPad and Mac, the Settings row of the sidebar.
- Choose Sermons on this device. The languages on your device come first, then the ones you can add, under a Find a language box and a line with the room used and free.
- Each language says where it stands: its size to download, Waiting…, a bar while it downloads, where it stopped, or how many texts it holds and their size.
- Tap Download, Stop, Continue or Remove beside it. Remove asks first.
If a download stops because the app or the website was closed or the connection dropped, it carries on by itself once it is open again and online. New and corrected texts come down by themselves, a few files at a time. In the app, Stop holds a download until you tap Continue, and you are told when the device is short of room.
What works with no connection
Works without a connection
- Reading any sermon in a language you downloaded, and the index in Browse for it.
- The days and the texts of the plans you follow. The app keeps a plan’s texts by itself; the website keeps them once you keep the sermons.
- In the app, the recordings you downloaded, listed in Downloads.
- On the website, sermons you opened online before, for a while: the browser can clear them when it needs room.
- Highlights and favourites: they are kept on the device and join your account once you are back online.
Needs a connection
- Ask and conversations: the box says that conversations need a connection, and stays off until you are back online.
- Searching inside the sermons. The index still opens.
- Streaming a recording you did not download.
- Downloading a language in the app; on the website, a sermon in another language that you have not opened before. Side by side and Read along need a connection too.
- Signing in, and keeping your account in step with your other devices.
The app and the website tell you: No internet connection appears at the foot of the screen when the connection goes, and Connection restored when it comes back.
Remove it
Web
In Settings, under Sermons on this device, click Remove from this device. The sermons leave this device, and nothing is downloaded again until you ask.
App
In Settings, under Sermons on this device, tap Remove beside a language, then confirm. Its texts leave the device; you can download them again at any time, and your highlights and notes stay. The texts of plans you follow come back by themselves.
Deleting the app removes everything it kept on the device, the library included. Your account keeps your own library.
How big is it?
In the app, about 35 MB for English, the same to download and on the device, and up to about 50 MB for a language with several versions; Sermons on this device shows the figure before you start. On the website, the library takes about 108 MB for English.
Can I keep two languages?
In the app, yes: download as many as you like in Settings, under Sermons on this device, and remove the ones you no longer read. On the website the library holds one, your main language.
Will it work in airplane mode?
Yes, for the sermons on the device, your plans and, in the app, the recordings you downloaded. Ask, search and streaming wait for a connection.
How do I download the sermons?
Open Settings and tap Download beside a language under Sermons on this device. On the website, use Settings too.
Will my reading plan work on a plane?
Yes. In the app, a plan you follow keeps its days and its texts on the device while you are online, so open the app once with a connection after you start a plan. On the website, keep the sermons on the device in Settings first.
Can I read offline on the website?
Yes. In Settings, Sermons on this device keeps every sermon in your language on that computer, tablet or phone. Without it, what you have already opened there still opens. Search and Ask need a connection.
